The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, so they take place decades before the events of the original Harry Potter movies. The Harry Potter franchise starts with the eponymous hero at the age of 11, who discovers he’s actually a wizard. He receives an invite to attend Hogwarts, under the guidance of kind Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. There, he makes friends, enters his teen years and hones his powers before facing off against the Lord Voldemort, the dark wizard who killed his parents. That means each of the seven books in the Potter series is set in a different September-August school year, starting in 1991 when Harry was 11 years old. Everyone came into the Wizarding World through the Harry Potter books and movies, which introduced us to a gifted 11-year-old, his friends Ron and Hermione, and their hallowed school of magic, Hogwarts. Watching the Harry Potter movies in order, seeing the story unfold chronologically in-universe, used to be as easy as finding the one where Daniel Radcliffe looks youngest and starting from there. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (

Columbus again gave us plenty of the color that later installments rather lacked and showed a great eye for which bits of the book needed to appear in movie form and which could hit the cutting room floor. One of the unsung heroes of the franchise, this second installment amps up the danger without sacrificing any of the magic. There’s a rogue house elf comedy segment at the start but, by the end, Harry’s stabbing the hell out of a giant snake with a centuries-old sword.

Harry learns that Snape was always loyal to Dumbledore, and that Harry is himself a Horcrux. The defenders of Hogwarts continue to fight on; Harry is resurrected, faces Voldemort and kills him. In Harry’s fourth year of school (detailed in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Hogwarts hosts the Triwizard Tournament, a contest between Hogwarts and the schools Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. Harry is unwillingly entered into the contest, becoming Hogwarts’ second participant after Cedric Diggory, an unusual occurrence that causes his friends to distance themselves from him. Harry claims the Triwizard Cup with Cedric, but in doing so is teleported to a graveyard where Pettigrew kills Cedric, then resurrects Voldemort using Harry’s blood. Voldemort convenes his supporters, the Death Eaters, and Harry manages to escape after a duel with Voldemort.

The first book, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” was published in 1997. Nearly 26 years later, eleven films, one reunion special and a Universal experience dedicated to the magical Wizarding World have grown out of Rowling’s literary staple in childhood fiction. This new chapter of the story zips back to the 1920s and follows gawky British wizard Newt Scamander as he tries to round up the various magical creatures he has inadvertently let loose in New York City. Of course, he finds himself embroiled in a plot by the dark wizard Grindelwald. Yates gets a lot of criticism for his directorial work in the series, but this movie shows just how well he can handle a magical set piece. The Battle of Hogwarts is utterly jaw-dropping, even though we can’t forgive that massive book change at the end.

How to Watch Harry Potter Movies In Order: See All 11 Movies Chronologically

The longest book became one of the shortest movies, despite the fact there was originally a three-hour cut. Huge kudos to everybody in the editing room on this one. Goblet of Fire marks the turning point in the franchise. Danger and death become a firm reality, and the rest of the story feels darker – and looks darker, thanks to David Yates – from here on out. There’s a notable exception in Goblet of Fire’s delightfully carefree Yule Ball sequence, complete with a musical cameo from Jarvis Cocker. If you want to enjoy the Wizarding World the way millions of fans around the world did starting back in 2001, then this is the order to watch the Harry Potter films.

At times, Peacock had the Harry Potter movies as an exclusive. Currently (as of June 23, 2023), only Max is are streaming the Harry Potter movies including those Fantastic Beast films. “But I said the edition was worthless due to it having no dust jacket. Some time later I learned the book was never released with a dust jacket,” the mom said. “At that point, we stored the book away. It lived like the young Harry Potter did, in the cupboard under the stairs.” Besides Max, your best bet for watching the entire iconic film series is by purchasing it on Blu-ray or DVD with this gift set collection. You’ll always have access to any of the films in the series at any time, even if you don’t have Wi-Fi or don’t want to pay for a monthly subscription to Max. As Harry enters his sixth year at Hogwarts school for witchcraft and wizardry, he is starting to truly grow up after being faced with even more death. In this film we get our first true look into the motives of Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) and Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton).

Harry also takes lessons with Dumbledore, viewing memories about the early life of Voldemort in a device called a Pensieve. Harry learns from a drunken Slughorn that he used to teach Tom Riddle, and that Voldemort divided his soul into pieces, creating a series of Horcruxes. Harry and Dumbledore travel to a distant lake to destroy a Horcrux; they succeed, but Dumbledore weakens.
